I like the idea in general, to have sometimes skill challenges like that. Using these rules for every occasion would be just wasting our time imo. Like rolling 3 times everytime your char would like to use a heal skill for example. Depending on the situation it can add extra flavour to the session, but overusing it would not be the best imo. Farkas' example where he wants to mix diplo and intimidate is what i dont agree with. The outcome of a situation should be entirely different if we make the subject to coop with us via diplo or via intimidate. Yes we would probably get the same info if we are lucky, but I feel like befriend some1, and freak some1 out is kinda opposite to each others I could imagine something like this for a skill challenge: The party finds a device, and the players try to identify it. Sadly during this a couple enemies show up, which results in 3 of us fighting and 3 of us still trying to determine the item. The reason why not all of us fight against the enemy, is that before they show up we realized that time is of the essence. We have a limited time to use this, and we need to use this in order to progress in the dungeon, but if we missuse it, it can cause serious trouble for us. In this situation the 3 guy could help each others out by sharing information and using different skills to understand the object. The first round 1 uses spellcraft to identify any kind of magic, the other guy uses knowledge nature cuz the item is overgrowned by some kind of plant, and they probably need to remove it somehow, but simply just trying to cut it off is not working. The 3rd guy uses decipher script, cuz he with his spot check realized some kind of tiny writings on the back side of the item. He fails to read/understand it but he realizes that the language is probably elven. Telling this to the party resulting in a switch. The guy who was trying to decipher the writings, goes to fight with the enemy, while 1 of the fighters go to the writings, cuz he understands/speaks elven. All of the successfull actions give some skill challenge points which needed to use the device in time. So yea, something like that sounds fun to me, but rolling 3-5-7 times for simplier things sounds bad

I think that it's going to work more like Something simple is just a check, as it's always been. But if it's story driven then there will be a series of checks, one made for each character in turn, until a certain number of successes, or failures, is achieved which will determine the direction of the story. There need not be combat. You can do a skill challenge for something as simple as making your way through the woods, or up a mountain, using various skills to assist in the overall goal.
